Quantum Computing Stocks: IonQ, Quantinuum Lead the Charge with Trapped-Ion Technique
Quantum computing has the potential to be a major technological breakthrough after artificial intelligence (AI), and several companies are at the forefront of this field. Companies like IonQ, Quantinuum, D-Wave, Infleqtion, and IBM are exploring different approaches to achieve accuracy in quantum computing.
IonQ is leading the charge with its trapped-ion technique, achieving 99.99% two-qubit gate fidelity. It has also made significant acquisitions across various areas of the quantum ecosystem, including a quantum foundry that will help advance prototypes more quickly and scale more easily. Quantinuum, another top player in terms of accuracy, uses the same trapped-ion approach and expects to hit 99.999% logical fidelity in 2027 with its new Sol system.
D-Wave is using superconducting qubits, which are exponentially faster than the trapped-ion modality. However, it plans to use fluxonium qubits, a type of superconducting qubit that shows characteristics comparable to its annealing technology. Infleqtion has carved out a niche in quantum sensing and precision tools with its neutral-atom approach, which suspends individual atoms in a vacuum using uncharged atoms rather than charged ions.
IBM is investing heavily in quantum computing, planning to spend over $10 billion on the technology over the next five years. Its latest innovation is a quantum fridge that it believes will be key to error reduction and scaling quantum systems.
