Sarawak and IBM Collaborate on Quantum-Safe Cybersecurity Hub
The Sarawak Artificial Intelligence Centre (SAIC) and IBM Malaysia are teaming up to create the Sarawak Quantum Safe Centre, a hub focused on post-quantum cybersecurity, research, and skills development. The center aims to be a sovereign innovation hub for quantum-safe readiness in Sarawak and East Malaysia, supporting organizations in adopting post-quantum security measures.
The initiative comes as global organizations shift toward post-quantum cryptography standards finalized by the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). In August 2024, NIST approved FIPS 203, FIPS 204, and FIPS 205, which cover key establishment and digital signatures designed to resist quantum computer attacks. Malaysia is also developing a national migration plan to protect critical information infrastructure.
Under this collaboration, SAIC and IBM will help organizations identify cryptographic assets, assess risks, and prepare systems for a transition to post-quantum cryptography. They plan to use IBM Guardium Cryptography Manager to inventory cryptographic assets and develop frameworks for managing the transition. The partnership will also include customer engagement programs, demonstrations, and service offerings for businesses and government agencies.
Dickson Woo, country general manager and technology leader at IBM Malaysia, emphasized the need for public-private collaboration to address risks from future quantum computers. He stated that the collaboration combines IBM's global expertise with Sarawak's vision to strengthen quantum-safe readiness and cultivate future talent.
