Smart Home Platforms Converge on Model Context Protocol
The smart home industry has seen a significant shift in recent weeks, as four major platforms - Amazon Alexa+, Sonos, Home Assistant, and Google Home - have adopted the Model Context Protocol (MCP) within six weeks of each other. This convergence is striking in its speed, with no industry consortium or regulatory body mandating MCP.
Each platform arrived at this conclusion independently, driven by technical merit and ecosystem pressure. The protocol has become the de facto standard, much like HTTP won the early web.
The subscription models of these platforms have diverged sharply, with Google Home Premium Advanced costing $20 per month for agent capabilities, Amazon Alexa+ also sitting at $20 per month, Sonos shipping MCP support for free, and Home Assistant remaining free and open-source. This creates a two-by-two matrix: two subscription models versus two open models.
For enterprise builders, this split matters, as they can target all four platforms with the same protocol implementation but must navigate different monetization layers. The protocol convergence has eliminated integration costs, but business model divergence remains.
