Southwest Airlines Aims for Premium Class on Boeing 737s
Southwest Airlines is shifting its business model to compete with legacy carriers by introducing premium cabins on its Boeing 737s. The carrier has been rolling out extra legroom seats across its entire fleet, but this move is mainly aimed at monetizing existing economy seats rather than offering a true domestic first class.
The Dallas-based airline plans to offer a premium cabin, although few details have been given about the project's priority. In contrast, carriers such as American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and United Airlines already offer domestic first class on their 737s.
Introducing a new first class cabin would be challenging for Southwest due to the limitations of its Boeing 737 fleet. The aircraft lacks onboard ovens, which would require retrofitting full-size forward galleys to accommodate enhanced service for premium passengers.
