Tech Giants Dominate Global Market Cap: Nvidia Surpasses Apple as Largest Publicly Traded Company

The five largest publicly traded companies in the world are all technology names: Nvidia, Apple, Alphabet (Google), Microsoft, and Amazon.

The mainstreaming of artificial intelligence has been a key driver of their enormous stock price gains. Nvidia's market capitalization has grown more than tenfold to $5.3 trillion since 2009, largely due to its processing chips being at the heart of most AI data centers.

The five biggest companies now collectively account for 30% of the S&P 500's combined market cap, and nearly 40% of the index's value consists of technology tickers. This imbalance has raised concerns about the health of the market.

Nvidia displaced Apple as the world's largest publicly traded company in 2024, but its position at the top is not guaranteed. Size does not guarantee future performance, and things can change quickly enough to justify avoiding a given company's stock simply because it's large.
