Tech Giants Join Forces to Tackle Shipping Emissions Through ZEMBA Initiative
Technology giants Google and Microsoft have joined forces with logistics firm DSV to tackle greenhouse gas emissions in shipping through the Zero Emission Maritime Buyers Alliance (ZEMBA).
ZEMBA pools demand from cargo owners, running tenders for shipping services that use low- and zero-emission bunker fuels.
Hapag-Lloyd has already used liquefied biomethane under ZEMBA's inaugural tender to offer emission reductions, while the company won a subsequent e-fuel tender in 2027 alongside North Sea Container Line (NCL).
The two shipping companies plan to use e-methanol and green ammonia on their routes respectively, resulting in around 120,000 mt of greenhouse gas emissions being cut over three years.
