Time Traveling Through Your Stock Portfolio
An interactive 'time machine' tool lets users see how much $100 in certain stocks could have grown to today. For instance, investing $1,000 in Apple in 1980 would be worth around $2.6 million today.
The tool also shows that a $25 investment in Apple at its opening would be worth about $65,000 today. Similarly, a $25 investment in Microsoft at its opening in 1986 would be worth over $125,000.
Experts say you don't need to have a lot of money to start investing in the stock market. Scott Laing, clinical assistant professor of finance at the University at Buffalo, notes that 'what matters is you're in the market, and usually over time, a rising tide lifts all ships.'
Laing recommends starting with index funds like the S&P 500 or ETFs, which are essentially pre-diversified assets. The historical average annual return of the S&P 500 is about 10%, according to Fidelity.
