UnitedHealth Group's turnaround efforts are gaining traction, according to management at the company's recent appearance at the Wells Fargo 21st Annual Healthcare Conference. The company reported stronger Medicare Advantage performance and a steadier Medicaid outlook.

The Medicare Advantage margins are tracking towards the upper half of the company's 2-4% target range for 2026, while Medicaid is running near the low end of its guided loss range but expected to recover in 2027. Commercial margins were flat year-over-year due to indirect delivery route costs and broader risk-pool changes.

Optum Health, a subsidiary of UnitedHealth Group, saw improvement driven mainly by clinical management and operating execution, not just better underwriting. The company lifted its 2026 buyback plan to at least $5 billion and is pushing a multi-year cost-reduction program with technology and AI.
