US Court Sees First Lawsuit Over Alleged AI Development Slowdown
A new lawsuit in the US has accused four major AI companies - Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, and SpaceXAI - of making an illegal deal to slow down their AI development.
The plaintiffs argue that this coordination hurts consumers who pay for AI subscriptions by reducing the value they get from services like ChatGPT, Claude, Grok, and Gemini.
The alleged agreement took place on September 12, when Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei published an essay calling for industry-wide cooperation to slow down AI advances in favor of stronger safety measures. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, SpaceXAI CEO Elon Musk, and Google DeepMind co-founder Demis Hassabis publicly responded in support of Amodei's proposals on the same day.
The plaintiffs claim that this agreement among major AI rivals has an anticompetitive effect on consumers and could potentially lead to stronger regulation. They point out that even Amodei acknowledged possible antitrust issues, suggesting that the US government mediate or enable discussions across AI labs.
