US Stocks Slump as Bond Market Pressures and Oil Prices Rise
US stocks experienced a decline on Thursday, pressured by the bond market and rising oil prices. The S&P 500 slipped 0.2%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 182 points or 0.4%. The Nasdaq composite was down 0.5%.
The higher yields in the bond market are slowing the overall economy, making borrowing more expensive for individuals and businesses. This is particularly concerning given the high inflation rates and the massive gap between government spending and revenue.
The yield on the 10-year Treasury briefly neared 5.15% before pulling back to 5.11%. This is roughly the same level as in 2007, up sharply from its previous 3.97% level.
Nvidia was the heaviest weight on the S&P 500, sinking 1.4%, while Everpure's stock jumped 16% after it stood by its financial forecasts and expected revenue growth to accelerate.
