Vietnam Airlines Boeing 787-9 Overruns Runway During Takeoff from Munich

A Vietnam Airlines Boeing 787-9 aircraft overran the runway during takeoff from Munich Airport on August 15, before circling to burn fuel and returning for an emergency landing. The plane was operating flight VN34 from Munich to Hanoi.

According to publicly available flight data and media reports, the widebody jet used nearly the full runway length before lifting off, with some observers describing the takeoff roll as unusually long. Video footage shared by aviation enthusiasts shows the aircraft briefly running beyond the paved surface at the end of the runway, kicking up dirt and debris.

Despite the dramatic sequence at liftoff, the aircraft successfully climbed away from the airport and entered a holding pattern over southern Germany. After roughly two hours in the air, the plane followed racetrack-style patterns consistent with fuel dumping before returning to Munich for an emergency landing.
