Wellesley Tree Farm Touts Organic Methods Amid Pests and Weeds
A family-run organic tree farm in Wellesley is doing things differently. Silver Creek Nursery, owned by Steph and Zach Muma, relies on natural methods to control pests and weeds, rather than chemical herbicides and pesticides.
The nursery's focus is on preserving long-term land health to improve the strength and resilience of their trees. Their test orchard boasts over 500 cultivars of food-bearing plants, including apples, pears, plums, peaches, cherries, quince, medlars, and apricots.
Zach Muma explained that they ship bare-root stock trees across the country. Unlike typical nursery trees, these are grown directly in the ground and sold without any soil around the roots.
