Windows 11 Fragmentation Set to Continue Until Version 27H2 Release

Microsoft has yet to confirm its plans for Windows 11 version 27H2, but we can infer some details from previous versions. Starting with the current state of affairs, most Windows 11 users run on the Germanium platform release, which powers versions 24H2 and 25H2. However, a new version called Bromine, exclusive to Snapdragon X2 and RTX Spark devices, has been introduced.

The reason for this split is due to timing convenience: extra kernel-level work was required for these new Arm chips, making it easier to build them into a new platform release rather than retroactively updating the Germanium platform. As a result, Bromine-based PCs will not receive optimizations for existing hardware.

This means there will be fragmentation between version 26H1 and 26H2, with users on 26H1 ineligible for the 26H2 update. However, Microsoft assures that this won't be permanent, and users running 26H1 will eventually be updated to a newer platform release - likely Windows 11 version 27H2 in 2027.

Version 27H2 is expected to introduce a new platform release, which will follow the usual measured rollout approach. It's not clear yet what platform release this will be based on, but it's likely to be newer than Bromine and possibly Strontium, which is expected to be finalized in the first half of 2027.
