Black Sea Exports Lag, Uncertainty Clouds Global Wheat Market

The global wheat market is closely monitoring exports from the Black Sea region due to persistent logistical challenges and disruptions affecting shipping capacity.

Russian and Ukrainian shipments remain significantly below historical levels, with cumulative exports since the beginning of the marketing year totaling around 294 million bushels, equivalent to approximately 8 million metric tons, one of the lowest levels recorded for this time of year in more than a decade.

In September, Russian exports are projected to fall by nearly 53% from the same month last year, while Ukraine's cumulative shipments would reach only about 99 million bushels-approximately 2.7 million metric tons-roughly 60% below year-ago levels.

The lack of an export recovery is adding uncertainty over the amount of wheat that will actually be available to the market during the marketing year, with approximately 1.84 billion bushels of wheat still needing to be exported, equivalent to roughly 50 million metric tons, compared with about 1.87 billion bushels-51 million metric tons-remaining at the same point last year.
