Prairie Farmers Battle Harsh Weather and Global Disruptions

Canadian farmers are facing an unusually challenging harvest season due to weather conditions and global market disruptions. According to Stephen Vandervalk, a fourth-generation wheat grower from southern Alberta, severe rainfall has hindered crop growth in many areas. 'It would have been a lot nicer to have that six weeks ago,' he said.

The Canadian average retail price of diesel is over 80% higher than last year's price at $2.75 per litre, making it difficult for farmers to access the fuel needed for their operations. Higher diesel prices are particularly problematic during harvest season, which is one of the most fuel-intensive periods of the year.

The conflict in Ukraine and the Middle East has also disrupted global supply chains, leading to higher costs for fertilizers and other essential inputs. Vandervalk described fertilizer prices as 'absolutely astronomical,' with high fuel costs being a secondary concern.

Agricultural trade associations have expressed concerns about the impact of these challenges on farmers' livelihoods. Rick White, head of the Canadian Canola Growers Association, noted that farmers are fighting mud to get their crops off the fields. 'Farmers are fighting mud trying to get out on the fields,' he said.
