Shell-led Consortium Backs $23bn LNG Canada Expansion

A consortium led by Shell is backing a $23bn expansion of the LNG Canada project. The expansion will increase production capacity to around 9 million tonnes per year, up from 7.8 million tonnes currently.

The investment is expected to be split between the consortium and the current owners of the project, which include Royal Dutch Shell, Petronas, PetroChina, Mitsubishi Corporation, and Diamond S Shipping. The expansion will be carried out in two phases, with the first phase starting in 2024 and the second in 2028.

The LNG Canada project is a major natural gas export facility located in British Columbia, Canada. It began commercial operations in 2020 and has been operating at around 80% capacity since then.
