Citi and Coinbase Unite to Revolutionize Institutional Crypto Payments
Citi and Coinbase are working together to make digital asset payments more accessible to institutional clients. The collaboration aims to bridge the gap between traditional finance (TradFi) and decentralized finance (DeFi). One of the key features is the ability for Citi's clients to move money in and out of their accounts 24/7, just like a regular bank transfer.
Coinbase already has a system that converts fiat currency into cryptocurrency and back again. Citi will connect its clients to this system, making it easier for them to pay with or cash out stablecoins. The two companies are still working out the details of how this process will work, but they aim to have more information available in the next few months.
The stablecoin market has seen significant growth in recent years, with over $306 billion worth of stablecoins currently in circulation. In 2025 alone, stablecoins handled $11.2 trillion in transactions, a figure that's comparable to Mastercard's $10.6 trillion in the same year.
