Ethereum Struggles Below $2,700 as ETF Outflows Persist
Ethereum is starting October with mixed signals, as its price struggles to break past key resistance levels amid weak institutional demand. On October 5, U.S. spot Ethereum ETFs saw net outflows of approximately $50.7 million, extending a trend of negative flows that began at the end of September. The lack of sustained institutional buying is keeping bulls on the defensive, despite the traditional optimism surrounding 'Uptober', a term reflecting the historically strong performance of cryptocurrencies in this month.
The technical outlook for Ethereum remains cautious, with the price currently trading around $2,698. The cryptocurrency failed to hold above the $2,720 resistance level, shifting focus to support at $2,630. A break below this level could push Ethereum toward the $2,550 mark, where the 50-day simple moving average lies. The Relative Strength Index (RSI) also shows a bearish divergence, indicating weakening momentum despite recent price attempts to stay near highs.
Adding to the market's complexity, the Glamsterdam upgrade is set to activate on the Sepolia network on October 6. This upgrade includes enhancements such as enshrined proposer-builder separation and gas-pricing changes aimed at boosting Ethereum's Layer 1 throughput. However, the Ethereum Foundation has clarified that this upgrade is specific to Sepolia, with mainnet implementation dates yet to be determined.
Despite the seasonal optimism associated with October, the early days of the month may bring heightened volatility for Ethereum. The combination of ETF outflows, unresolved technical resistance, and the ongoing network upgrade could lead to sharp price movements before a clearer trend emerges.
