Euro Surges as German Business Sentiment Beats Expectations, BoJ Uncertainty Weighs on Yen
The EUR/JPY currency pair advanced above 180.50 as strong German business sentiment data boosted the Euro, while doubts about further monetary tightening by the Bank of Japan (BoJ) limited the Japanese Yen's gains.
Germany's IFO Business Climate Index rose to 89.9 in September, exceeding market expectations and supporting the Euro. The index has been steadily increasing since February, with the Expectations Index climbing to 90.4 from 89.
In contrast, the Japanese Yen struggled to benefit from higher Japanese bond yields as BoJ Governor Kazuo Ueda's comments after last week's rate hike fell short of increasingly hawkish market expectations. Markets currently assign around a 30% chance to another rate increase, which would take the benchmark short-term rate to 1.5% in October.
