Boeing Hopes Fade as China Deal Stalls Ahead of US-China Summit

Hopes of a new deal between Boeing and China are dwindling ahead of Thursday's summit between US President Donald Trump and Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping. Sources close to the matter say negotiations for a new commitment from China to buy Boeing planes have stalled, with the planemaker instead focusing on finalizing a May agreement for 200 aircraft.

This deal was announced in tandem with Trump's last summit with Xi Jinping in Beijing, putting Boeing back into competition for Chinese jetliner orders. The US planemaker had been largely shut out of the market since 2017, while European rival Airbus expanded its share.

China is expected to order around 9,000 new jets by 2045, more than any other region, according to Airbus and Boeing market forecasts. Before the May agreement, discussions centered on a deal for as many as 500 jets.
