BU Ditches Zoom for Microsoft Teams Amid Rising Costs
Boston University (BU) is switching from Zoom to Microsoft Teams as its standard virtual meeting platform. The decision comes due to rising licensing and software costs for Zoom, which the university's Information Services and Technology department cannot afford.
The switch will be completed by July 1, 2027, giving students and faculty time to adapt to the new system. According to BU spokesperson Jill Jess, the university will provide resources and training to help with the transition.
However, not everyone is pleased with the change. Some students and faculty members are hesitant about switching from Zoom, citing concerns over the interface and functionality of Teams. They argue that Zoom has become the norm for many users and that changing platforms may cause confusion and inconvenience.
BU's Information Services and Technology department assures that the Microsoft Teams plan is HIPAA-compliant, meaning students' information will be protected. Faculty members like Seth Villegas see the switch as an opportunity for students to familiarize themselves with software they may encounter in the corporate world.
