Caterpillar Targets India's Infrastructure Boom with Three New Machines
Caterpillar has introduced three new machines designed for specific segments of India's construction equipment market. The Cat 355 Hydraulic Excavator targets quarry and mining work, while the Cat D5 Dozer is aimed at mining and heavy infrastructure projects.
The third machine, the Cat 120 GC Motor Grader, is a cost-effective option built for road maintenance contractors in rural areas. Each machine has been designed to meet the demands of India's ₹11.21 lakh crore capital expenditure budget for FY2025-26.
India's infrastructure pipeline is expected to drive equipment demand over the next decade, with the government allocating 3.1% of GDP for capital expenditure in FY2025-26. The country's construction equipment sales have already seen a 26% increase in FY24, with earthmoving equipment accounting for 70% of total sales.
Caterpillar is focusing on providing a total cost-of-ownership package to its customers, rather than just selling machines. The company is offering a range of digital tools and lifecycle support services to help customers reduce costs and improve uptime.
However, there are concerns about the execution of India's infrastructure projects, with over 60% experiencing significant delays due to issues such as land acquisition, environmental clearances, and contractual disputes.
