GE Aerospace Says Mid-Seal Issue Won't Delay Boeing 777X Entry
GE Aerospace, the US company behind the GE9X engine, has revealed that a durability issue with its mid-seal will not delay the Boeing 777X aircraft's entry into service next year. The mid-seal is a part connecting the front and rear sections of the engine.
According to Rahul Ghai, Chief Financial Officer at GE Aerospace, testing showed the mid-seal was not as durable as expected. However, the company has redesigned the part and begun shipping GE9X engines with the new seal to Boeing in the third quarter.
Ghai expressed confidence that the redesigned seal will meet the necessary standards after internal testing. The existing seal can be used for certification work under way, including ETOPS testing, while the redesigned seal is undergoing a separate FAA certification process.
