Google Rolls Out Age-Assurance Tech in Canada Using Machine Learning

Google has started rolling out an age-assurance technology across its services in Canada. The system uses machine learning to determine whether a signed-in user is under 18, based on signals tied to their account, including search patterns and YouTube viewing behavior.

No new data is being collected for this purpose, according to Google's official blog post. If the system estimates a user as under 18, default protections activate automatically across its platforms, including YouTube wellbeing features, content recommendation safeguards, and blocked access to adult-only apps in Google Play.

Adults who are misclassified as minors have a correction path, which involves uploading a photo of their government ID or a selfie. Jeanette Patell, Director of Government Affairs and Public Policy at Google Canada, described the pace: 'In the coming days, we'll begin to gradually roll out this technology in Canada, carefully monitoring progress as we expand its availability.'
