Google Rolls Out Automated Age-Estimation System in Canada
Google is introducing an age-assurance technology in Canada that uses machine learning to determine whether a signed-in user is under 18. The system will automatically flag Canadian accounts as minor and activate restrictions without prompting users for confirmation.
The estimation happens based on signals tied to the account, including search patterns and YouTube viewing behavior. No new data is being collected to make this determination.
According to Google Canada's official blog post, if the system flags an account as potentially belonging to a minor, default protections will activate across its platforms. These include YouTube wellbeing features, content recommendation safeguards, a disabled Maps Timeline, and blocked access to adult-only apps in Google Play.
If adults are misclassified as minors, they have the option to correct their age by uploading a photo of their government ID or taking a selfie. This verification step is not a standard requirement for every Canadian user but exists as a fallback.
