A disabled Navy veteran in Clinton Township is receiving a life-changing home makeover thanks to a grant from the Home Depot Foundation and dozens of volunteers. The project, led by Team Patton Outreach and funded by the Home Depot Foundation, aims to help Richard Lumetta stay independent and safe within his own home.

Lumetta, who lives with congestive heart failure and atrial fibrillation among several other conditions, had been struggling with access inside his home. The renovation includes new railings at the side and front doors, laminate flooring to replace carpet, and relocating the washing machine to a spare bedroom so Lumetta no longer needs to navigate stairs.

The project is designed to keep Lumetta from having to enter a nursing home, according to Tammy T. Patton, founder of Team Patton Outreach. Patton, a veteran herself, said she was inspired to give back after the loss of her 16-day-old daughter 25 years ago.
