Walmart Valued at Premium Prices: Buy, Sell or Hold?
Walmart's (WMT) stock has been under scrutiny as investors weigh whether it's a buy, sell, or hold. Seeking Alpha analysts Juxtaposed Ideas and Gary Alexander shared their views on the matter.
Juxtaposed Ideas believes Walmart is at best a Hold due to its defensive retail positioning in an uncertain macroeconomic environment. Management's conservative FY2027 guidance suggests that the company may experience mixed results in the second half of 2026, attributed to intensified price rollbacks, higher fuel prices, and softer consumer spending trends.
The analyst notes that similar price rollbacks have been reported by peers Target (TGT) and Costco (COST), partly funded by IEEPA tariff refunds. However, it remains to be seen how these measures will impact their margins in the long run.
Gary Alexander, on the other hand, is more bearish on Walmart, labeling it a Sell. He argues that the stock trades at premium valuations, nearly 2x those of its main rival Amazon (AMZN), while enjoying fewer fundamental tailwinds. The slowdown in sales for discretionary general purchases further disqualifies its high valuations.
The analysts' differing opinions reflect the complexities and challenges faced by Walmart in today's retail landscape. As investors consider their next move, they must weigh the potential risks and rewards associated with holding or selling the stock.
