Chile forecasts slow copper recovery after historic output slump
Chile expects only a 3% rebound in copper production next year after an 8.4% drop this year, with aging mines and deteriorating ore quality cited as key challenges. The country’s output hit a two-decade low in the third quarter, driven by issues at major mines operated by Codelco and BHP Group. Despite the slow recovery, Chile’s production is expected to contribute significantly to a global supply improvement in 2027. The refined copper market will remain tight, with a small surplus forecast next year. Cochilco raised its copper-price forecasts to $6.18 a pound for 2026 and $5.95 for 2027.
